Contaminated food is a serious health problem in the United States today. Every year, thousands of people get ill by consuming products that had been infected with dangerous bacteria such as e-coli, listeria, salmonella, shigella and staphylococcus. It is a problem that alarms consumers. Government is also concerned about the safety of our food supply. Posing a wide range of potential health risks, tainted food adversely affects many sectors of the nation's economy. Contaminated food not only sickens people, but costs business and government millions in lost revenue and in lawsuit pay outs.
Recognizing the importance of protecting the nation's food supply, President Obama's newly created Food Safety Working Group, will study the issue and recommend the measures necessary to improve food safety regulations in this country. Moving fast to address the problem, some changes have already been implemented. The group purposes to concentrate on three key areas: prevention, inspection and enforcement, including faster incident response times.
President Obama's Food Safety Working Group is a welcome step forward in food safety. Americans should have confidence that the food they eat is safe and that they won't become ill when eating in a restaurant or from the food purchased at the grocery store. Government needed to improve regulations and enforcement. However, there are many things that individuals and business can do without government intervention to effectively reduce the incidents of food contamination. Improved sanitation practices could greatly reduce the number of people that become sick from infected food. The leading causes of most food-borne illness are improper food handling, poor hygienic practices and contamination from sources such as unclean water and flies. The common housefly and the horse fly are dangerous insects because they carry bacteria and disease from the most disgusting places onto our food. A fly can infect food just by landing on it. Flies are filthy, excreting fecal pellets wherever they land including food and food preparation surfaces. Given the right conditions, the bacteria will spread, creating a very serious situation.
Protecting food from contamination by flying insects can be as simple as exterminating the flies before they have a chance to land. An effective, non pesticide insect control device can drastically reduce the chance of food contamination by bacteria carrying houseflies. It is a simple and economical solution. This is extremely important for restaurants, food manufacturers, grocery stores, and for anyone in the foodservices industry who is concerned about the health and safety of the products they sell.
Last year's recall of numerous food products due to bacterial contamination as well as wide spread outbreaks of e-coli and salmonella poisoning have spurred the government into action to protect its citizens.
